Avid landscaper and Williamsburg resident, Bill and his wife Robin created Southern Blue Lawn & Landscaping in 2006 to fill a need in their community. They blended their passion for beautiful landscaping with their corporate background based on strong work ethics and customer service values.
A lifelong resident of Hampton Roads, Bill’s ingenuity and passion for landscaping excellence began in Newport News at the age of eight with his first paying job. Barely able to see over the non self-propelled lawn mower he was pushing, Bill showed up at a neighbor’s house asking if he could mow their much-overgrown lawn. He saw a need, got the job and was driven to succeed.
In 1994, Bill moved to Williamsburg with Robin and their five children. It was when Bill contacted a local landscaping company in 2005 for a project and experienced continued delays and poor workmanship that inspired the creation of Southern Blue. Bill gave up his career in sales and management to be his own boss, pursue his passion and better serve the Williamsburg and Hampton Roads communities.
Today, Southern Blue still exemplifies the founding principles of Bill and Robin – providing high-quality and customer-focused landscaping services to commercial and residential customers in Hampton Roads. Each day, they demonstrate the company’s motto – “There’s nothing quite like a southern blue sky…We’re working hard so that you can relax and enjoy it.”
Doug Lockwood
, MBA, VSLD, Senior Landscape Designer and Business Development
An expert in landscape design, Doug brings more than 25 years experience to the Southern Blue team. Homeowners benefit from Doug’s creative ideas, comprehensive outdoor living plans and extensive knowledge of local soils and plant life.
Doug’s designs have garnered numerous industry awards, including Homerama, Parade of Homes and the Maymont Flower & Garden Show. A member of the Virginia Society of Landscape Designers (VSLD), Doug received the honor of the Best Landscape Design/Build Project in the state by VSLD in 2008.
Doug has a BS degree in Biology with a concentration in Plant Sciences, and an MBA from the University of Richmond. To view Doug’s award-winning landscape creations, click here.
Ed Carnahan
, Manager, General Landscape
Ed is an expert at projects with more than 20 years of experience in the construction and landscaping industries. His extensive background provides him with the skills to successfully manage every project step, including framing, grading, installation, irrigation systems, lighting systems and water features.
While Ed’s skills are vast, he specializes in large gazebos, outdoor kitchens and fire features. As the leader of Southern Blue’s landscape installation division, Ed works closely with homeowners to ensure their complete satisfaction (link to Golden Guarantee) with our designs.
Michael Wheeling, Landscape Maintenance Manager
Michael joined our team with more than 25 years of landscape experience, including design, installations and complete maintenance. Originally from Connecticut, he worked with some of the area’s finest nurseries and landscape companies to provide services on properties and estates from Connecticut to New York City.
His expertise is leveraged to create comprehensive lawn maintenance programs, provide ideas for long-term property enhancement, solve any type of drainage problem, and design, enhance and install landscape irrigation systems.
He is a Virginia-certified Pesticide Applicator and has a Advanced Landscape Crew Manager certification from the Virginia Horticultural Foundation. In addition, Michael has received several beautification awards from the City of Williamsburg for properties he maintains.
Eric Thacker, Hardscapes Supervisor
In his career, Eric has created and built some of Williamsburg’s greatest gazebos, patios, outdoor kitchens and ponds. With more than eight years of experience, Eric has extensive knowledge of rough and final grading, and makes him well-suited to for new hardscape installations.
Eric installs retaining walls, free stack stone walls, paver driveways, verandas, patios and water features that are as aesthetically pleasing as they are structurally sound. To compliment the hardscape designs, Eric can also install any type of irrigation or lighting system.
Sharon
, Office Manager
With 16 years of experience in landscaping that began in nurseries, Sharon knows a lot about plants – what they look like and how they grow. This knowledge and her keen understanding of landscape materials and processes help her keep all our projects on schedule and to client expectations.
Throughout every step of the project, Sharon is in contact with our customers and the team to ensure a successful completion. She makes sure you are completely informed about what will be done, the timeline and what to expect next.
In addition to managing our customer relations for all aspects of our business, Sharon processes all of the orders for plants and materials for residential and commercial projects.
